Think native trees are messy, difficult or damaging? Think again!
Native trees sometimes get a bad rap, but many of the common complaints come down to choosing the wrong tree for the wrong place. The right native tree, planted in the right location, can be a fantastic addition to your garden.
MYTH 1: “Native trees are messy.”
Actually, not ALL native trees are messy!
While some trees are "messier" than others, every tree (native or exotic) drops leaves, flowers, fruit or bark. This is a natural part of being a tree.
In fact, fallen leaves and organic matter can provide valuable habitat and return nutrients to the soil.
We Recommend: Look at the location for your tree along with the traits that are important to you (think size, colour, flowers, exposure to light etc) then choose a species that suits the area and best fits what you want from your tree.
MYTH 2: “Native trees have aggressive roots.”
Actually, ANY large tree can have a substantial root system.
Tree roots generally grow where conditions are favourable, particularly where there is the right amount of moisture and oxygen. If a large tree is growing too close to buildings, pipes, paths or other infrastructure, this is where problems tend to emerge, however you will find this to be true of any species of tree, not just natives.
Australian native trees ARE more likely to have root structures that have adapted to surviving in our harsh climate including nutrient-deficient soils and tolerance to heat and cold.
We Recommend: Choose a tree that will reach an appropriate size for its location and give it enough room to grow.
MYTH 3: “Native trees grow too fast.”
Fast growth isn't necessarily a bad thing!
Many Australian native trees establish quickly, providing shade, shelter and habitat sooner.
Growth rates vary enormously between species and are influenced by soil, water, climate and growing conditions.
In fact when it comes to hedges, and screening trees, fast growth is to our advantage! Whether you need a windbreak, some privacy or to create a backyard sanctuary, fast growing natives can be a very convenient way to add some life to your property.
We Recommend: Choose a species with a growth rate and mature size that suits your needs.
MYTH 4: “Native trees are difficult to maintain.”
Many natives are remarkably well adapted to Australian conditions.
Choosing a species suited to your local climate and soil can mean less intervention once the tree is established.
Like any tree, natives benefit from good planting, watering while establishing and appropriate pruning when required.
All our trees are sown and grown locally so are hardened off to local conditions, so these trees will thrive in your garden when recommended care and establishment tips are followed.
We Recommend: The right plant + right place = easier maintenance.
MYTH 5: “Native trees don't look as good as exotic trees.”
Have you seen an Australian native in full flower?
Aussie trees are definitely different to the trees that were brought here from other parts of the world, but they are just as stunning in their own way.
From spectacular flowering gums and bottlebrushes to colourful wattles, banksias and grevilleas, Australian plants offer an incredible range of flowers, foliage, shapes and sizes.
And there's something extra special about planting a resilient tree that belongs in our landscape.
MYTH 6: “Native trees don't attract much wildlife.”
In reality it's quite the opposite!
Australian native plants can provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities for local wildlife.
Flowers provide nectar and pollen, while foliage, bark, hollows and branches can provide habitat for insects, birds and other animals.
We Recommend: Planting natives (especially natives local to your area) can turn your garden into a valuable wildlife habitat.
The real secret?
It's not about whether a tree is native or exotic — it's about choosing the RIGHT TREE for the RIGHT PLACE.
Consider:
Mature size
Water requirements
Sun and exposure
Soil conditions
Distance from buildings and infrastructure
Benefits for local wildlife
Choose wisely, plant thoughtfully, grow native and the right Australian native tree can provide beauty, shade, habitat and environmental benefits for decades to come.
